Jimmy responds to Sandy Hook Elementary School incident from the viewpoint of an autistic person...
Just recently on December 14, 2012, there was a shooting at a Connecticut elementary school. There were reports that the shooter may have been diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome. Now many people are concerned that other kids diagnosed with Asperger’s might do the same thing. I don’t think this is fair. I will say that one day in school; I had an experience with another disabled kid who started to become violent. The teachers wanted him to sit down, and he started to become very upset. At the time, I didn’t understand why the teachers didn’t just leave him alone.
Also, I know there is a difference between violence and people who become angry. But to say that there is a connection between Asperger Syndrome and violence is not right. It is like saying that all German Shepherds are bad and are violent. Some autistic kids are violent and some aren’t. I think it depends on what the kids are exposed to at home.
In my opinion, all kids are more likely to act violent, because ofextremely violent video games. I read that all of the shooters in recent times, including Adam Lanza, had been obsessed with playing violent video games. I know that I can become obsessed with different topics, and I do think if someone with Asperger Syndrome is allowed to play violent games, they might be more inclined to become obsessed with the game. I think that once they start to play regularly and enjoy the game, they will start to think that they can do the same behaviors they see on the game in real life and not get in trouble for it. Parents should try to get their children interested in something else besides violent video games and spend more time with their kids playing board games, reading books, and anything else you think would help your kids. I know that there are times when I feel a lot of anxiety. If parents notice that their child is upset or anxious about something, I think they should sit in a stress swing. I am very big, and if I become I agitated, I still enjoy sitting in a quiet room in my swing. It relaxes me. I think schools should also have these available for kids who become upset.
